Hummingbird Feeders

The hummingbirds are back in force.  And with our warm weather sans wind, they are busy about their usual activities of mating, nesting, and looking for food.  Place several feeders in the shade about your house where you can enjoy their company.  Essential to drawing and keeping a large 'crowd' of birds is feeder maintenance.  The sugar nectar should be kept fresh and full at all times.  If the birds don't drink it down in a day or two, empty, clean, and refill the feeder with a fresh batch.  According to the Audubon Society, the feeder should be cleaned with a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water at least once a week.  In hot weather, the sugar can ferment or mold, creating a sour nectar that is not attractive.  We recommend refilling with our Perky Pet brand Instant Nectar or using the tried and true boiled nectar.  After boiling tap water for several minutes, use the ratio of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water and mix until all the sugar is dissolved.  Unused nectar will keep up to 10 days refrigerated.

Once the birds are visiting your feeders regularly, keep them well maintained for healthy and happy friends all Summer.  If you need parts, cleaning equipment, nectar mix, or more feeders, visit our wild bird department at Clubb's Variety, 502 Main St.
