Frame in your PJ’s

Okay, we admit it.  We’ve all browsed Ebay, Amazon, or Cars.com while wearing who knows what.  Now you can frame while wearing whatever – we don’t care and won’t ask – we only want you to have the best picture framing at an affordable price.  The new Larson Juhl website allows you to select frames and mats from thousands (not the few other sites offer), upload your image or choose one of theirs, and send the whole thing to us for a price.

Then you can come to us (regular street clothes preferred) with your art and have your framing done professionally and in a timely manner.

Strip Therapy

Okay, as you can see from the picture, it is not what you think.  Oh, and the ‘therapy’ comes from spending a day or two preparing this top in a cool basement on these hot days.  This design from Brenda Henning comes to us from the Bear Paw Productions ‘Bali Pop Strip Therapy’.  Using strips and an innovative cutting technique, the design incorporates lights and darks for a textural contrast that comes off beautifully.  We have books and kits with these fabrics.  Or buy the book and let us help you with your own color creation.  Thanks Michelle for another beautiful quilt.

The Fishing was Good – and the eating….

These beautiful trout tasted even better than they looked.  Buy a package of two alder wood planks for $9.99 and enjoy smoked flavor right from your gas grill.   You can use these with chicken, beef, or pork – but trout and salmon are especially delicious.  This method was first used as the fresh catch was pegged to wood slabs and stood up near the evening or morning campfire.  Soak the planks in water for an hour, spread a thin layer of olive oil on the top, and place on the grill for a few minutes.  Then place as many as will fit.   Put the grill lid down and regulate temperature of your grill to 350º to 400º in the dome.  In about 30 minutes the meat should be flaky.  Remove and enjoy.  Place your planks in a bucket of water safely to extinguish and cool immediately.  Use as long as they can stay together on the grill.

You will need to catch your own fish.

Genuine Madras Cottons

Madras fabric – named for the then English city of Madras, India.  It is a lightweight, high thread count fabric with patterns indistinguishable front or back.  Durable and forgiving, it looks great in a shirt, top, jacket, pants, or skirt – ironed or not.  We just received a 6 bolts of these patterns at $5.99 per yard.  This is not a closeout but just a great price for a one time buy.  This will only last as long as our beautiful summer.

Hummingbird Feeders

The hummingbirds are back in force.  And with our warm weather sans wind, they are busy about their usual activities of mating, nesting, and looking for food.  Place several feeders in the shade about your house where you can enjoy their company.  Essential to drawing and keeping a large ‘crowd’ of birds is feeder maintenance.  The sugar nectar should be kept fresh and full at all times.  If the birds don’t drink it down in a day or two, empty, clean, and refill the feeder with a fresh batch.  According to the Audubon Society, the feeder should be cleaned with a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water at least once a week.  In hot weather, the sugar can ferment or mold, creating a sour nectar that is not attractive.  We recommend refilling with our Perky Pet brand Instant Nectar or using the tried and true boiled nectar.  After boiling tap water for several minutes, use the ratio of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water and mix until all the sugar is dissolved.  Unused nectar will keep up to 10 days refrigerated.

Once the birds are visiting your feeders regularly, keep them well maintained for healthy and happy friends all Summer.  If you need parts, cleaning equipment, nectar mix, or more feeders, visit our wild bird department at Clubb’s Variety, 502 Main St.
